Outspoken lawyer Mansour becomes Zamalek chairman for third time Mortada Mansour elected chairman of Cairo club Zamalek after beating off competition from old rival Kamal Darwish in Friday's elections
Outspoken lawyer Mortada Mansour, a highly controversial figure who is known for his fiery remarks and constant squabbles with opponents, was elected as chairman of Cairo club Zamalek for the third time on Friday. His arrival was met by derision from Zamalek's football supporters on social networking websites, with many users say they fear he will land the club in hot water, recalling numerous incidents during the last decade which cut short his previous two spells as chairman. However, Mansour did enough to win over the club's general assembly as he comfortably secured the majority of votes, beating off old rivals Kamal Darwish and Raouf Gaser. Darwish, under whom Zamalek won their last Egyptian Premier League title in 2004, was running the club on a temporary basis following the dissolution of the club's previous board of directors as a pattern of administrative instability continued to strike the ailing giants. Mansour was first elected chairman in 2005 but he was sacked by the sports ministry few months later following some bizarre antics, which included a fist-fight with his deputy. He filed a lawsuit that eventually saw him reinstated as Zamalek's president in April 2006 but he was dismissed again after lifting his shoe in an insulting gesture during the Egypt Cup final against arch-rivals Ahly, who won 3-0. Zamalek's hardcore football fans are worried Mansour may sack coach Mido, a fan favourite who took charge of the club in January in a bid to revive their glory days. There is no love lost between both men. Although Mido declined to publicly criticize Mansour, he shared a video of a popular football internet show that ran under the title: “say no to Mortada Mansour”. “I'm supporting the technical staff. But I have a message for Mido: please stay away from politics and do not discuss any matters that are not related to football,” Mansour said in an interview with Egyptian satellite channel CBC. Success-starved Zamalek, who only won two Egypt Cup titles in the last 10 years, are seeking to end lengthy domestic league and African Champions league droughts. They will be seeking to reach the Champions League group stage when they host Zambia's Nkana FC on Sunday in the second leg of the competition's round of 16, having settled for a goalless draw away from home. Zamalek's last continental triumph was in 2002 when they beat Morocco's Raja Casablanca in the final of Africa's premier club competition.
