Preview: Zamalek hope history repeats itself against Zambia's Nkana Zamalek play Nkana FC in Zambia in the first leg of the African Champions League round of 16 on Saturday
Every time Zamalek face Nkana FC in the African Champions League they reach the final. Egypt's success-starved outfit hope this will be the case again when they face the Zambian side away from home in the first leg of the competition's round of 16 on Saturday. On three occasions, Zamalek overcame Nkana in a two-legged knockout tie to advance to the final, winning two of them in 1984 and 2002, which marked the last time they had lifted the coveted trophy. After a barren 12-year spell, the ailing Cairo giants will be yearning for another stroke of luck to narrow the gap on arch-rivals Ahly, who overtook them in the competition's hall of fame after claiming five titles in the last nine years. Zamalek's most memorable game against Nkana was in 1984 in Cairo, where the hosts displayed an attractive brand of attacking football to humiliate their opponents, formerly known as the Nkana Red Devils, 5-1 in the second leg of the quarter final. Saturday's match comes on the back of Zamalek's first defeat under rookie coach Mido, who is burdened with rebuilding an underachieving side. They produced a below-par display to slump to a 1-0 defeat by Masry in the Egyptian Premier League. "My players are ready for the crucial game against Nkana FC," Mido said in a television interview. "We know nothing about Nkana FC except what we learned from videos released by the Egyptian ambassador here in Zambia. “The loss to Masry won't affect the players during the Champions League game. The players are eager to win the away game to ease our task in the second leg,” he added. Mido also complained about the state of the pitch in Kitwe but his side can hardly offer excuses to their demanding fans if they slip up in the first leg. Zamalek have an almost injury-free squad, with pacy winger Hazem Emam likely to be the only absentee after he picked up an injury.
