Egypt's Minister of Housing Minister Sherif El-Sherbiny met Tuesday with a delegation from China's Jiangsu Fenghai New Energy Seawater Desalination Development Co., Ltd. (FHNED) to discuss potential cooperation in seawater desalination, the ministry said in a statement. The talks, attended by officials from the ministry of housing, the New Urban Communities Authority (NUCA), and the utilities sector, focused on expanding Egypt's desalination capacity and localising related technologies as part of the country's broader water security strategy. El-Sherbiny said Egypt's plan to boost desalination output rests on three main pillars: increasing production capacity through large-scale plants with up to 500,000 cubic metres per day, reducing construction and operating costs using advanced technologies, and localising desalination manufacturing within Egypt. He added that Jiangsu Fenghai, which operates a research centre specialising in desalination and renewable energy, was asked to prepare a feasibility study to set up a local factory for producing spare parts and key components for desalination plants within two years. Company representatives said they were keen to expand cooperation with Egypt in renewable-powered desalination projects and to share their technical know-how while working with local partners.
