Ahly celebrations go on despite crisis faced by president The Cairo giants will continue their celebrations of 19 internationally recognised titles despite the fact that club chairman Hassan Hamdy is currently facing corruption allegations
Egyptian giants Ahly will celebrate being the most successful club in world football as prescheduled on 26 March despite the recent crisis of club president Hassan Hamdy. On Monday night, Ahly was hit with the news of club president Hassan Hamdy being detained for 15 days pending investigations into corruption allegations during his tenure as the head of the Advertising Agency for Al-Ahram. His detention was ordered by Judge Tharwat Hamed, who was appointed to investigate the corruption. According to Ahram Sports, Ahly board have decided on Tuesday to keep the celebration program as scheduled despite the absence of the club's president. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) issued a statement on 24 February confirming Ahly had won more internationally recognised titles than any other club, overtaking AC Milan. The Cairo giants invited FIFA president Sepp Blatter, CAF president Issa Hayatou, and AC Milan vice-president and CEO Adriano Galliani to attend the event. "The Egyptian president and prime minister are also invited," Ahly said in a statement earlier in March. Ahly won their 19th international trophy last month – their sixth African Super Cup title – sending a blow to AC Milan whose officials regularly claim the Italian club's 18 international trophies make it the most successful club in the world. The club has won eight African Champions League titles, four African Cup Winners Cups, six African Super Cups and one Afro-Asian Cup.
