Sharaf endorses Egypt bid to organize the 2017 Mediterranean Games Egypt sets its ambitions on winning the bid to organize the 2017 Mediterranean Games in Alexandria
“Prime Minister, Dr. Essam Sharaf and Eng. Hassan Sakr Head of the National Council for Sports reviewed the detailed report on the nomination file of Alexandria City to organize the Mediterranean Games in 2017. The report includes procedures taken concerning sports constructions, hosting places, and playgrounds required.” the Cabinet of ministers' official website reported. The Prime Minister called for the preparation of a detailed report on the required financial arrangement to follow-up on the file. Plans include a new Olympic village to be constructed in the city of Alexandria on a total land surface of 252,000 m2. Five months ago the International Committee of Mediterranean Games (ICMG) announced that five cities have submitted their candidature for the organization of the 2017 Mediterranean Games. These cities are Alexandria (Egypt), Tripoli (Libya), Rijeka (Croatia), Tarragona (Spain) and Mersin (Turkey). The inspection commission started its visits in July and will present its report to the President and the ICMG executive committee members in February 2011. Egypt hopes to win the race for the 18th edition for the second time in their history as Alexandria was the city where this quadrennial multi-sport event started in 1951.
