The European Union (EU) is preparing to increase tariffs on several Ukrainian imports, including maize, sugar, honey, and poultry, starting June 6, 2025, TASS reported citing The Financial Times. The move will reverse previous duty-free access for these products, with some existing tariffs seeing substantial hikes. The European Commission is negotiating a new trade deal with Ukraine, seeking to replace the current tariff-free arrangements with "transitional measures". This includes splitting the annual tariff-free quota into monthly allocations to control import volumes while discussions continue. The decision follows disagreements between Kiev and Poland, which holds the rotating presidency of the EU Council. On April 10, Polish Minister Adam Szlapka confirmed that the EU would not extend Ukraine's trade preferences after June 5. Attribution: TASS Subediting: M. S. Salama
