Art Alert: Theatrical adaptation of El-Khamissi's novel 'Taxi' in Cairo
New adaptation of best-selling novel, performed in both Arabic and English, to take place in last two weeks of January
Published in Ahram Online on 17 - 01 - 2014

In their first performance, bilingual theatrical companyThe Thousand Tongueswill perform their adaptation of Khaled El-Khamissi's best selling book 'Taxi' in downtown Cairo's new art space Vent on 22, 26, 27, and 29 January.
The book, first published in 2006, is a candid portrait of the corruption, politics and double standards of life in pre-revolutionary Cairo, depicted via a number of conversations with taxi drivers which the author documented over the course of a year.
There will be performances of the play in both Arabic and English.
The theatrical adaptation, like the book, takes an unconventional approach to style, presenting the material not on a stage but as a scattered installation throughout the space.
Audiences are required to not only move through the space to watch the performers, but to interact with them and be part of the piece itself.
Taxi will be directed by Brian Farish, the company's performance wing director, and Rewan El-Ghaba; and has been adapted for the stage by the two directors, along with Mohamed Mahmoud Mostafa and Ahram Online's Kevin Dean. The performance stars up-and-coming actors Omar Madkour, Ahmed Radwan, Ahmed Ashrafi, Abdelrahman Nasser and Hend El-Shimy.
The Thousand Tongues company is made up of Egyptian and non-Egyptian members and focuses on giving a platform to local writers, and on working with public and private schools to produce plays through its educational wing.
Programme:
Taxi will be performed at Vent, 6 Kasr El-Nil Street, downtown Cairo
8pm 22, 26 January in Arabic
8pm 27, 29 January in English
Reservations are recommended as the space is limited, and can be made via Facebook message to Vent or via email: [email protected]
