Ghana promised double bonus for victory over Egypt Black Stars play Egypt in World Cup playoff first leg on 15 October, with second leg in Cairo a month later
The Black Stars have been given additional motivation ahead of their World Cup playoff against Egypt next week after the Ghana Football Association (GFA) said they would receive an extra win bonus is they defeat the Pharaohs. “GNPC [state-owned oil exploration and production company that sponsors the team] met with the team and promised to double whatever bonus the state is giving once they win the [first leg],” Ghana FA Communications Director Ibrahim Sannie-Daara confirmed to Ghanasoccernet on Wednesday. Ghana host Egypt in the first leg on Tuesday at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi. The second leg is scheduled for 19 November in Cairo, but Ghana has officially requested FIFA move it to a neutral venue due to security concerns. Coach Kwesi Appiah expressed his confidence that Ghana will secure its third consecutive appearance at the finals despite the strength of the Pharaohs. "It's a big game," Appiah told the GFA official website on Wednesday. "It's a game which is important to all Ghanaians and every member on my team is aware of that. "Egypt are seven-time African champions and trying to reach the World Cup for the first time since 1990. That will give them an added boost going into the game. "Their record means that we cannot look down on them. We can't get complacent. We have to prepare well and remain focused," he added. "The expectation will always be there whenever the Black Stars have a game. "I can say I was more anxious during the Zambia game. There's been no panic since the pairing with [Egypt]. "I have respect for them. They are a good side," concluded the Ghana coach.
