Ahmed "Mido" Hossam, the 27-year-old substitute marksman, came off the bench in the 56th minute of the Ajax-VVV Venlo game on day 16 of the Dutch league, replacing midfielder Christian Eriksen. It took Mido just six minutes to break the 0-0 deadlock after deflecting a loose ball into the back of the hosts' net. Miralem Sulejmani secured the victory when he tapped in the second five minutes before the final whistle. The former Tottenham and Middlesbrough striker ceased his chance to play a more prominent role with Ajax as injured strikers Luis Suarez and Mounir El Hamdaoui are to be sidelined for weeks. Ajax are third in the Eredivisie table with 31 points, three adrift of leaders PSV Eindhoven.
