Substitute Mido scored his first goal for Ajax after joining in the summer and dished out an assist as his side reached the Dutch Cup round of 16 with a 3-0 victory over second-division side Veendam. The Egyptian striker, who still looked overweight, was introduced in the second half to partner Luis Suarez upfront as Moroccan Mounir El Hamdaoui missed the game due to an ankle injury. He immediately injected zeal and managed to break the deadlock on the stroke of the hour mark after heading home a pinpoint cross from the left. It was his first goal since he netted the equalizer in Zamalek's 1-1 Egyptian league draw with Gouna in September last year. Ajax almost went two up in the 66th minute when the lively Mido found Suarez with a superb chipped pass but the Uruguay World Cup striker's bicycle effort was denied by the keeper. Suarez made amends ten minutes later when he beat the keeper with a low shot from a tight angle after a pass from Miralem Sulejmani. Mido helped Ajax, who lie third in the league table, wrap up the victory with three minutes remaining. He released Christian Eriksen with a deft pass with his left foot to notch home and put the icing on the cake. Mido's goal could boost his chances of earning a regular place in the squad of Ajax, the club where he made his name in the early 2000s before going on to play for a handful of clubs including Tottenham Hotspur, AS Roma, Marseille and Cairo giants Zamalek. The 27-year-old, who fell out of favor with Egypt coach Hassan Shehata, joined the Amsterdam outfit on a season-long loan from English second-division side Middlesbrough.
