Zamalek ease into Egypt Cup round of 16 with win over Tersana Zamalek open their Egypt Cup campaign with an easy 3-0 victory over second-division side Tersana on Tuesday
Zamalek eased into the Egypt Cup last 16 with a 3-0 win over second-division side Tersana as they aim to make the most of the absence of several heavyweights in the much-maligned competition. Midfielder Alexis Mendomo, playmaker Ahmed Eid and defender Ahmed Magdy scored in the first half to give the success-starved Zamalek, who are enjoying a superb run this term, an easy victory. Egypt's secondary domestic competition is devoid of Zamalek's arch-rivals Ahly, Ismaily and Haras El-Hodoud. The trio withdrew after a dispute with the Egyptian Football Association (EFA) over sponsorship issues. Zamalek, who last lifted the Egypt Cup trophy in 2008, needed 11 minutes to open the scoring in controversial fashion. Striker Ahmed Gaafar nodded a long ball into the path of the unmarked Mendomo, who superbly flicked the ball, turned and volleyed home from close range. However, television replays showed that the Cameroonian, who made few appearances this season, was in an offside position. Veteran playmaker Eid doubled the lead 10 minutes with a fortuitous goal. He muscled his way into the area after the ball twice rebounded off his challengers and into his path, leaving him with the easy task of firing past the keeper. Defender Magdy, another fringe player, completed the rout when he converted a penalty on the stroke of halftime after a Tersana defender handled a cross. Chances were few and far between in a dull second half as Zamalek claimed an easy win.
