Ex-Egypt PM Shafiq accused of squandering LE2.5 billion of public funds

Egypt's prosecutor-general has tasked the East Cairo Prosecution with investigating former minister of civil aviation Ahmed Shafiq and former ministry officials on charges of squandering public funds, Al Ahram Arabic language website reported on Saturday.
Shafiq, along with Ibrahim Manaa, former minister for civil aviation, and General Mohamed Abdullah, a former top official in the ministry, are accused of squandering LE2.5 billion from the state's coffers for their role in ordering the demolition of a Cairo International Airport building.
These charges are not the first to be leveled against the Mubarak-era minister, who was also accused, along with his daughters, of seizing land belonging to fish farms and illegally allocating it to the Pilots' Association for Land Development, which he headed at the time.
Earlier this week, Interpol refused a request made by Egypt's public prosecution to issue an international arrest warrant for Ahmed Shafiq, General Ahmed Helmy, an aide to Egypt's interior minister, had said.
Shafiq, who narrowly lost the presidential bid to Mohamed Morsi in last year's election, has been in self-imposed exile in Abu Dhabi since his defeat.
