CAIRO: Egypt's Chief Prosecutor General Talaat Abdallah on Tuesday asked the general prosecution's international bureau to address the Interpol to take steps for arresting former prime minister Ahmed Shafiq on charges of squandering public money. Abdallah ordered the bureau to issue a memorandum for the arrest of Shafiq on grounds of charges against him in the “pilots' housing” case, prosecution spokesman said on Tuesday. Prosecutor Osama al-Seidi earlier referred Shafiq and others to a criminal court after they had been charged with graft, profiteering, money laundering, and fraud while Shafiq was head of an association for housing air force officers. Last year a judge had ordered detaining Shafiq upon his return to Egypt to face charges of allocating land plots of the association to former president Hosni Mubarak's sons illegally. Shafiq left Egypt to the United Arab Emirates days after the result of the country's presidential elections was declared last June. BN
