Ahly miss Club World Cup, says midfielder Ashour Hossam Ashour hopes Ahly will win the Champions League title to reach the FIFA Club World Cup after a three-year absence
Ahly's defensive midfielder Hossam Ashour said on Wednesday his side's ultimate target is to play at the FIFA Club World Cup in December after a three-year absence. The Red Devils are looking beyond their African Champions League semi-final clash against Nigeria's Sunshine Stars, the tough-tackling midfielder said. "We miss the atmosphere surrounding the FIFA club World Cup," He was quoted as saying by Ahram Sports. "All things there are different; I miss that competition, especially that I featured in all of Ahly's three World Cup appearances," he added. Ahly will face Sunshine Stars on Saturday in Abuja in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final. The six-time African champions made three appearances at the Club World Cup in 2005, 2006 and 2008. Their best position came in the 2006 edition when they finished third. Ashour also said he hopes Ahly will meet title holders Esperance the final to take revenge on the Tunisians. The Tunisians eliminated Ahly from the semi-finals in 2010 on the away-goal rule following a 2-2 aggregate draw and also prevented the Cairo giants from booking a last-four berth one year earlier after holding them to a 1-1 draw in their last group-stage game. "We have to take revenge on Esperance, I hope to meet them in the final," Ashour added.
