Morsi meets Egypt's military council ahead of Suleiman funeral President hosts military figures at the presidential palace just hours before ceremony for controversial ex-spy chief
The head of Egypt's military council Field Marshal Mohamed Tantawi and several of his deputies held a meeting with President Morsi at the Cairo presidential place early on Saturday afternoon. The meeting was not announced beforehand, and no details of what were discussed have been disclosed. The tete-a-tete comes just a few hours before the funeral of Egypt's former intelligence chief, Omar Suleiman, which is scheduled for Saturday afternoon. Suleiman died in the United States on Thursday while undergoing medical tests. Morsi's acting spokesman previously announced that a delegation from the presidential office will attend Suleiman's funeral. The military council, which ruled the country following the resignation of president Hosni Mubarak in February 2011, issued a Constitutional Addendum this June, assuming the legislative powers of the dissolved parliament's lower house as well as some of the president's executive privileges. The addendum was roundly condemned by many of Egypt's post-revolution political forces, including the Muslim Brotherhood to which President Morsi belongs.
