Zamalek is Real Betis alternative: Egypt's keeper El-Shennawy Egypt under-23 national goalkeeper is back on top after a good performance in Friday's 1-1 draw with Turkey; lists his second and third choices if the move to Real Betis fails
Egypt and Masry goalkeeper Ahmed El-Shennawy has revealed that joining Zamalek is his second choice if he failed to complete his move to Spanish giants Real Betis. Earlier this month, El-Shennawy passed the Spanish giants' medical test before being monitored in the team's training sessions for a week, but it was reported that negotiations over the move collapsed. "The one-week trial was successful. Real Betis officials are determined to sign me but Masry president asked for an exaggerated amount to complete the deal," El-Shennawy declared to an Egyptian TV programme Saturday night. "Sealing a permanent move to the Spanish club is not certain now, since a one-season loan deal could be a compromise. Playing abroad is my priority, but if it failed, playing for Egypt's Zamalek will be my second choice. "Belgium club Lierse would be my last stop if I couldn't join the Whites, also," added El-Shennawy. El-Shennawy, who signed a five-year contract with Masry earlier this season, is one of the hottest talents in Egypt. Egypt under-23 national team guard, El-Shennawy, was heavily criticised after his recent humble performances in the Toulon friendly tournament, but he defended himself well after Friday's 1-1 draw with Turkey. "I am proud to play for both the first and the Olympic national teams. Claims that I am delivering poor performances are not true. These rumours were spread also in the U-23 African Championship where I was greatly praised for my brilliant achievements," the player explained. The 21-year-old goalkeeper is forced to leave Masry after it was suspended for a year and relegated to the second division, following the Port Said Stadium disaster which left more than 70 killed in February.
