Presidential candidates Moussa and El-Bastawisi meet Saudi Ambassador With two days to go before Egypt's presidential elections kick off, contenders Amr Moussa and Hesham El-Bastawisi sit down with Saudi Ambassador
Presidential contenders liberal Amr Moussa and leftist Hisham El-Bastawisi met with Saudi Arabian ambassador in Cairo, Ahmed El-Qattan two days before polling for the presidential elections are scheduled to open on Wednesday. Early Monday, presidential candidate former Mubarak regime prime minister Ahmed Shafiq also visited El-Qattan at the embassy. This comes following visits by other candidate, IslamistMohamed Selim El-Awa, Muslim Brotherhood candidateMohamed Mursiand liberal ex-Muslim Brotherhood member, now backed by SalafistsAbdel-Moneim Abul-Fotouh. Such visits come at a time when Egyptian lawyer Ahmed El-Gizawi is under arrest in Saudi Arabia, undergoing investigations after being arrested on 23 April for the illegal smuggling of anti-depressant drugs. Tensions between Egypt and Saudi Arabia escalated following the arrest when several activists staged a sit-in outside the embassy headquarters prompting Saudi Arabia to temporarily recall its ambassador and close the embassy in late April. Egypt's first post-Mubarak presidential poll will be held on 23 and 24 May, with a runoff round on 16 and 17 June if no single candidate wins an outright majority. Egypt's next president will be formally named on 21 June.
