Military doctor given 5 years in jail for joining Cabinet protest

Army Captain Amr Metwally was sentenced for five years Wednesday for breaking military disciplinary codes, when he joined last December's protest outside the Cabinet offices calling for Prime Minister Kamal El-Ganzouri to step down.
Metwally was also given a suspension in rank promotion by the military court.
The tribunal charged Metwally with three years in jail for neglecting to obey military orders, refusing to be present at his unit, discussing politics and appearing on satellite channels without a license, wearing army uniform outside a military unit and whilst with protestors as well as absence from his unit.
Metwally was sentenced for another two years for undisciplined military behaviour, publishing parts of films which depict him wearing military uniform via the internet and harming military morale.
Metwally has only been in the military for a year since graduating from medical school.
Earlier Tuesday, army officer Ahmed Shoman, who joined protesters during Egypt's 18-day uprising and again at Mohamed Mahmoud Street demonstrations in November 2011, was sentenced to six years of hard labour. He was suspended from his military rank also for breaking military disciplinary codes.
