2019 sports yearender: Salah leads Liverpool to European glory, enjoys further individual successes
Published in Ahram Online on 31 - 12 - 2019

In the past two years, Mohamed Salah smashed individual records. He was in for further individual successes in 2019, coupled with collective achievements with Liverpool.
Egypt's marksman, who began the year by scooping Africa's best player prize for a second successive time, finished the season as the joint top scorer of the Premier League with 22 goals, winning the Golden Boot award again.
But the highlight was that Salah had also managed to lead Liverpool to a long-awaited European glory.
Making up for the agony of picking up an injury in the 2018 Champions League final against Real Madrid, the 27-year-old came back roaring as Liverpool reached the final again.
On 1 June, Mo set Liverpool on their way to a 2-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur by converting a penalty early in the first half as the team won their first crown since 2005. His goal was the second fastest scored in a Champions League final.
"I'm very, very happy. This is the kind of things that doesn't happen a lot in a lifetime. It's the dream of a seven or eight-year-old kid," he said.
"I'm determined to be the first Arab to win the competition twice. I'm already looking forward to the next season."
The latter statement reflects Salah's unyielding desire for more successes.
Little more than two months following the Champions League triumph, Salah also played an instrumental role in steering Liverpool to the European Super Cup title.
Although he drew a blank in an exciting 2-2 draw with Chelsea over 120 minutes, he tucked away the decisive penalty in the shootout as Liverpool beat their English rivals 5-4 on penalties.
Salah also scored nine Premier League goals in the first half of the new season as Liverpool made an explosive start and ended the year on a high when he helped the Reds to another title in Qatar.
Liverpool won their first Club World Cup crown, with Salah named the tournament's best player for his all-round contribution, even though he did not find the net in wins over Mexico's Monterrey and Brazilian side Flamengo.
