Albert Camus play at French Institute Play based on Albert Camus' philosophical essay 'The Myth of Sisyphus' to be performed at French Institute on Sunday
The French Institute will host a performance of The Passengers, directed by Omar Ghayatt and produced by Studio Moroni, on Sunday 19 February. The play is based on an article by the French-Algerian writer and philosopher Albert Camus, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1957. The play is based on Camus' 1942 philosophical essayThe Myth of Sisyphus, depicting a mythological Greek King. Camus introduces themes such as searching for meaning and clarity in a world devoid of god, eternal truths and values. He calls it the philosophy of the absurd, which requires a person not to be depressed but to revolt. He compares this philosophy with Sisyphus, who was condemned by the gods to forever push a boulder up a mountain, only to see it roll down again before his eyes. In spite of the tragedy of the situation, Sisyphus is happy and fulfilled. The performance was featured at the Creative Youth Festival at the institute in 2006. It was also featured in both Cairo and Alexandria at the Contemporary Dance Festival in 2008, as well as in Bonn, Germany at the Cairo-Beirut Festival in 2009. The performance will take place on Sunday 19 February at the French Institute (formerly known as the French Centre of Culture and Cooperation - CFCC), at 7pm.
