Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi said on Saturday that Egypt supports the efforts of the United Nations to maintain international peace and security. Sisi's remarks came during his meeting with Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres on the sidelines of the G20 summit held on 2-29 June in the Japanese city of Osaka. According to a statement by presidency spokesman Bassam Rady, the president also stressed Egypt's support for UN efforts aimed at advancing the sustainable development. From his side, Guterres expressed appreciation for the extended cooperation between the UN and Egypt, highlighting the pivotal Egyptian role in Africa and the Middle East. Guterres said that the UN is keen to strengthen cooperation with Egypt. Regarding the current Egyptian presidency of the African Union, the secretary-general emphasised the United Nations' reliance on Egypt's vital role to strengthen and deepen the strategic partnership with the African Union. Sisi and Guterres also tackled the recent developments in the region, especially the situation in Libya.
