Ivory Coast won the 1992 title without conceding a single goal in their six-match campaign. Egyptian legend Mohamed Diab El-Attar “El-Diba” is the only player to have scored four goals in a final game when the Pharaohs defeated Ethiopia 4-0 in 1957. Two of EI-Diba's goals were scored with the right foot one with the left and a glancing header. The first goal of the African Cup of Nations was scored by Egyptian forward Raafat Attia in the 25thminute against Sudan from a penalty kick. The 1000thgoal was also a penalty converted by Nigeria's Captain Austin Jay-Jay Okocha in 2004 in Tunisia. For the first time in the event's history the 2000 tournament was held in two countries, Ghana and Nigeria. In 1982 the Confederation of African Football rescinded the two-player limit on foreign based players on each national team allowing all the countries to use of their best stars playing across Europe. Before 1967 no foreign-based players were eligible to play in the Nations Cup. The African Cup of Nations was broadcasted for the first time in 1970 during Sudan's edition. The final of the 1970 was the only one who had to be replayed as Zaire were held by Zambia to a 2-2 and two days later they defeated them 2-0 in Cairo stadium to claim the title. Initially the competition started with three teams in 1957, expanded to four teams in 1962, six in 1963, eight in 1968, 12 in 1992 and 16 in 1998. The Confederation of African football (CAF) has decided to hold the CAN in odd-numbered years starting from 2013 to avoid playing in the same year of the World Cup. Coaches and players from African countries that qualified for the World Cups had previously complained from that intense scheduled. The CAN has been played in an even years since 1968 despite it had started in 1957. Nigeria used three captains during their game against Benin in the African Cup of Nations 2010. Captain Joseph Yobo started the game and had to leave because of injury. He gave the captain's band to Yakubu Aiyegbeni who was substituted and the armband was given to Osaze Odenwengie. The Super Eagles ended up having three captains in one match. During the 1965 edition held in Tunisia, the hosts reached the final game courtesy to a toss of coin as they had the same number of points and same goal difference like Senegal. The Tunisians lost the final 3-2 against Ghana. A toss of the coin was also used in 1988 that favored Algeria to reach the semi-finals after being level with Ivory Coast. Like Tunisia they were unfortunate in the semi-finals as they lost to Nigeria on penalties 9-8 after being held in initial time to a 1-1 draw. The 1959 edition held in Egypt had only three participants Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia and coincidently they had three coaches from Eastern Europe that were Czechoslovakians Jiri Starosta (Ethiopia), Josef Hada (Sudan) and Hungarian Pal Titkos (Egypt). Titkos led the Pharaohs for the title. South Africa was one of the main founders of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and was set to play in the first edition of the African Cup of Nations 1957 but they were suspended and put on hold because of their apartheid regime and willing to play with a squad including only caucasions. They made a triumphal returned in 1996 when they won the title on home soil. Egypt forward Mohamed Nagy “Gedo” is the best ever substitute of the history of the African Cup of Nations as he ended on top of the CAN 2010 scorers' chart after scoring 5 goals coming always as a second-half substitute. Egyptian Abdel-Aziz Salem - who became the CAF first president – went to the FIFA Congress in Zurich in 1956 seeking the foundation of the Confederation of African Football. However the demand was subject to sarcasm due to the little number of cofounders (Egypt, Sudan and Ethiopia) and hasn't been even included on the meeting's agenda. Salem decided to withdraw from the Congress as a sign of protest saying “If all the countries aren't treated equally here our presence is useless.” Sudanese Mohamed Abdelhalim followed him what forced FIFA to respond to their demand. The CAF was officially founded in 8 February 1957.
