Ride-hailing app Uber increases fares in Egypt after recent fuel price hike
Published in Ahram Online on 18 - 06 - 2018

San Franciso-based ride hailing app Uber increased their fare prices in Egypt on Monday to compensate for the recent increase in local fuel prices.
"With events like the most recent fuel price increase, a slight adjustment to our prices was made to ensure that your drivers continue to make a sustainable living whilst driving with Uber," said the company in a blog post on its official website.
An email was sent to all Uber subscribers in Egypt earlier Monday about the new increase.
For an average UberX ride, the base fare has been raised from EGP 6 to EGP 7, and the EGP 1.85 per kilometer has been raised to EGP 2.3
As for the more luxurious UberSELECT rides, the base fare is EGP 10 and the price per kilometre is EGP 2.9 while the fare base for Uber's scooter is EGP 3 and the price per kilometer is EGP 1.3.
In Alexandria, UberX ride's base fare is now EGP6.5 and the price per kilometer is EGP 2.3 while the Uber scooter's base fare is EGP 3 and the price per kilometer is EGP 1.55.
In the Nile Delta cities of Mansoura, Tanta, Damanhur and Zagazig, as well in the Red Sea city of Hurghada, the UberX ride's base fare is EGP 6 now while the price per kilometer is EGP 2.1.
In Egypt's North Coast during the current summer season, the UberX ride's base fare is now EGP 15 while the price per kilometer is EGP 2.55.
Uber says that despite the new fare increases, the service is still considered the most affordable in the country.
Careem, Uber's main rival in Egypt, has not yet declared an increase in fares in response to the fuel price hike.
On Saturday, Egypt's ministry of petroleum announced an increase in fuel prices as the country continues to phase out energy subsidies in to reduce the government's gaping deficit.
