The area of cultivated land in Egypt increased 0.5 per cent to 16.08 million acres in 2008/2009, compared to 16.01 million in 2007/2008. While the aggregate cultivated area augmented by 4.2 per cent to reach 9.11 million acres, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS). On the other hand, wheat production increased 6.8 per cent during 2008/2009 and Sharqeya governorate achieved the highest production while cotton production declined 11.4 per cent. Kafr el-Sheikh governorate was the highest producer of the crop. Qena governorate was the largest producer of sugar cane with an aggregate 15.48 million tons, a decline nonetheless of 6 per cent. Similarly, rice production shrank by 23.9 per cent with Dakahlia governorate the highest producer.
