General Adel El-Morsi, head of Egypt's military judiciary, said that he had ordered a “swift investigation” into a video widely circulated on the internet appearing to show police and military officers in the Delta city of Daqahliya torturing two detainees while they were being interrogated.
General El-Morsi explained that the reporting of such an incident in the media is considered an official complaint about the event, and that the military cannot accept such violations of human rights no matter who is responsible.
The video showing the torture of detained ‘thugs' in a police station caused an outcry earlier this week, with activists fearing Mubarak-era torture techniques are once again being widely used to extract confessions from suspects.
In the video, three prisoners are shown in a room with twelve police and army officers. Two of the detainees are then slapped and electrocuted by the officers, with one officer repeatedly electrocuting them on the ears. One of the prisoners was also humiliated by being repeatedly called ‘Shosho', a woman's name.
The scene allegedly took place at El-Kurdi police station in the El-Daqahliya governorate. Some internet activists have claimed to recognise several officers in the footage and confirmed they work in El-Daqahliya.
