Spain parliament dissolved, stage set for election Spanish parliament dissolved by Prime Minister Jose Luis Zapatero, having served two terms while not seeking re-election, amid rising economic crisis and a staggering jobless rate in the country
Spain's prime minister has dissolved Parliament and formally called for general election on 20 November. Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero's announcement Monday kicks off the campaign for voting in which this economically distressed and debt-laden country is widely expected to usher in a government led by the conservative opposition Popular Party. Zapatero served two terms spanning nearly eight years but is not seeking re-election. He announced in July, as well as the date for early election in November. nOn Monday he made it formal by signing a decree and informing King Juan Carlos. Spain is saddled with a nearly 21 percent jobless rate, anaemic economic growth and soaring borrowing costs as its economy struggles to shake off the outcome of a burst real estate bubble.
