Rashid Mohamed Rashid, former minister of industry, has been sentenced in absentia to five years in jail Saturday after being convicted of embezzling public funds. He was also ordered to return the sum LE9.3 million he was found guilty of accumulating during his tenure. Rashid, who was openly praised by former US President George W. Bush as a model Egyptian reformer, was out of the country when former President Hosni Mubarak was deposed. He has been accused of using his government position to subsidise food export industries in which he is a shareholder.
