Ittihad-Degla hooliganism sees 22 injured

Supporters of Ittihad of Alexandria invaded the pitch after their team suffered a last-gasp 2-1 defeat by Wadi Degla in Wednesday's Egyptian Premier League game to reignite security concerns in a country still reeling from the effects of the January 25 Revolution.
The ministry of health announced on Thursday that 22 people were injured during the fan invasion at Alexandria Stadium. Twelve of the injured are police officers while the other ten were supporters of Ittihad.
The supporters of the Alexandria outfit descended onto the pitch after Wadi Degla snatched a second goal during injury time, showing the relegation door to Ittihad which could find itself in the second division next season.
The angry fans clashed with security personnel and chased Ittihad and Wadi Degla players who escaped into the tunnel.
The ugly scene was reminiscent of the violence which forced the cancellation of an African Champions League clash between Zamalek and Tunisia's Club Africain in Cairo two months ago.
Egypt Football Association (EFA) may cancel domestic league play this season, as it's not the first time football supporters in Egypt commit such disorderly and riotous acts.
Zamalek fans were guilty of similar actions two months ago when they invaded Cairo Stadium during the game against Tunisian side Club Africain in the CAF Champions League.
The EFA emergency committee headed by Chairman Samir Zaher will hold a meeting on Thursday to investigate the Ittihad and Wadi Degla riot and decide on the future of the Egyptian Premier League.
