A riot following a football match left 22 people injured, including 12 military recruits, said the Egyptian Ministry of Health on Thursday. On Wednesday evening, the Alexandria stadium turned into a battleground for fighting between security forces and al-Ittihad al-Sakandary club fans, who broke into the stadium following a match between the Ittihad and Wadi Degla clubs. Wadi Degla club scored a goal during stoppage time - time put back on the clock to make up for that lost due to substitutions, injuries, or other stoppages. The match ended with a 2-1 Wadi Degla victory. Angry Ittihad fans assaulted the Austrian referees and beat players from both teams. The armed forces interfered to control the chaos that swept the stadium between the public and stadium security. They shot into the air to disperse the masses. Abdel Hamid Abaza, assistant minister of health, said that the 22 injured people, including the 12 recruits, are hospitalized, but are in good health. He added that the 12 recruits have been transferred to the Police Hospital, while ten civilians have been transferred to a different hospital in Alexandria.
