Nigeria targets Arsenal's Aneke Nigeria's newly appointed coach Samson Siasia is set to scan Europe to find players with Nigerian origins and convince them to join the Super Eagles
The former international forward Samson Siasia has said hewants to strengthen his squad for the future African Cup of Nations 2012 and the World Cup qualifiers 2014. According to KickOffNigeria.com, he has set his sights on Arsenal's youngster Chukwuemeka Aneke. "I have had someone make contact with Arsene Wenger (Arsenal's coach), and we hope to have a meeting in the coming weeks," Siasia told the Nigerian website."We have also asked him to set up meetings with other European coaches with Nigerian players in their squad and we will meet with all of them." Born in England, Aneke, 17 , has already featured for England U17 but under the FIFA rules he can opt to play for Nigeria at senior level as his parents are Nigerian. "We want to talk to all those players who are eligible to play for Nigeria and see if they will come. If they agree, fine. If they don't, then we move on. And Aneke is one of those players," Siasia added. Manchester City's on-loan defender Nedum Onuoha is also on Siasia's most wanted list, especially since the player had previously rejected a Nigerian offer claiming he wants to focus on his club career. "I need to know those who will be with us so that I can include them in our planning. After now, we need to focus on working with those who are committed to playing for Nigeria with passion and commitment." The Super Eagles have been overshadowed on the continental level by Africa's Super powers like Egypt, Cameroon and Ivory Coast, and have not featured in an ACN final since 2000.They also had a frustrating record in the World Cup 2010 finals after conceding two defeats from Argentina 1-0 and Greece 2-1 and were held by South Korea 2-2 to finish bottom of the group.
