Tea with Nefertiti moves to Munich An exhibition showcasing over 100 works of art from and about Egypt to redefine concepts of time and place will be on view from 6 May until 7 September at the State Museum of Egyptian Art in Munich
Opening 6 May after making appearances in Qatar, Paris and Valencia, the exhibition titled Tea with Nefertiti: The Making of the Artwork by the Artist, the Museum and the Public will be on view in Munich this summer at the Staatliches Museum Ägyptischer Kunst (State Museum of Egyptian Art). Curated by the Lebanese-German duo Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath -- co-founders of Art Reoriented, a multidisciplinary curatorial platform based in Munich and New York since 2009 -- the exhibition sets out to construct a visual debate on the mechanisms through which artworks have been used to build images and perceptions of cultural otherness. More than 100 artworks, produced in different media by 26 modern and contemporary artists from Egypt and across the globe, are juxtaposed with Ancient Egyptian, Islamic and Coptic archival material in this exhibition. Works from as far back as 1800 BC are placed with works by the father of Egyptian sculpture, Mahmoud Mukhtar (1891-1934), along with artworks by surrealist painter Ramses Younan (1913-1966), as well as contemporary Egyptian artists including Bassem Yousri, Maha Maamoun and Iman Issa, among others. The collection also spotlights artworks of world-renowned 20th century European painters and sculptors, such as Paul Klee, Amedeo Modigliani and Alberto Giacometti, in addition to works by contemporary Chinese dissident artist Ai Weiwei. The show, a moving miniature museum, examines the multi-step process of artistic practice, beginning "through the eyes of the artist, within the museum or exhibition context, and lastly with the public sphere and mass media," according to the Tea with Nefertiti monograph. Before moving to its new home at the Egyptian Museum in Munich, where it will stay until September 2014, the exhibition was first showcased at Mathaf: Qatar's Arab Museum of Modern Art (November 2012-March 2013) before moving to the Institut du Monde Arabe (The Arab World Institute) in Paris (April-September 2013), and then at the Institut Valencià d'Art Modern (IVAM) in Valencia (November 2013-January 2014).
