Singapore Art Museum hosts Arab artwork exhibition
Exhibition showcasing work by artists with roots in the Arab world will be held at the Singapore Art Museum from 28 June - 8 September
Published in Ahram Online on 17 - 06 - 2013

In what will be the first Arab art exhibition in South East Asia, the Singapore Art Museum is hosting a show entitled "Terms & Conditions" from 28 June - 8 September.
Held in collaboration with the United Arab Emirates-based Barjeel Art Foundation among a number of other contemporary art institutions and collectors, the exhibition will feature a large collection of Arab art, including works by Egyptian, Palestinian, Lebanese and Emirati contemporary artists.
Artworks by installation and multimedia Palestinian artists Mona Hatoum, and Egyptian visual artists Huda Lutfi and Moataz Nasr will be among the works exhibited in Singapore this summer.
"The exhibition ... provides an inquisitive open-ended debate into how history and social realities are represented - with an emphasis on the Arab world," according to the exhibition's curatorial statement.
Generally, terms and conditions can "powerfully dictate the representation and interaction between people, entities and countries, as well as set parameters that appear rigid over time," argues the curatorial statement.
Paradoxically, the title hides behind it a collection of work that is difficult to categorise or bind by rigid terms or conditions. "Many artists with roots in the Arab world work simultaneously across different geographic, physical and cultural contexts, making it difficult to define and constrain them to specific identities and representations."
Therefore, the collection that will be on show to a South East Asian audience during summer 2013 will relay the diversity of contemporary Arab art.
Terms & Conditions is organised in collaboration with the Barjeel Art Foundation, the Abraaj Group Art Prize Collection, Mathaf-Arab Museum of Modern Art, Paris-based Museum of History of Immigration and collections of private individuals and artists.
The Singapore Art Museum is a public institution that houses more than 7000 works of art, including the world's largest collection of modern and contemporary Southeast Asian art.
