Autism Art Exhibition at Cairo Opera
The Tenth Creative Art Exhibition for Autism will take place Sunday 27 April at the Zyad Bakir Hall, Cairo Opera House. The exhibition, titled "Symbols", has been organised by the Egyptian Society for Developing Skills of Children with Special Needs (ADVANCE), a non-profit organisation that seeks to help persons with autism and other disabilities. Coinciding with Autism Awareness Month, the show will mark the 10th autism art exhibition.
The exhibition opened on 27 April and runs until 3 May.

Sabhan Adam and Hossam Dirar: Beauty and the Beast at ArtTalks
ArtTalks hosts an exhibition featuring works by Syrian-born artist Sabhan Adam (1973) and Egyptian-born artist Hossam Dirar (1978), who take on universal notions of beauty and ugliness through portraiture. "Each artist presents his perception of individuality by seeking to bring out whatever is common with the rest of humanity. For Sabhan Adam, it is ugly. For Hossam Dirar, it is beauty," reads the curatorial statement.

Between existence and nonexistence: exhibition at Mahmoud Mokhtar museum
In Amira Parree's solo exhibition "Between existence and nonexistence" – opening 15 April at Mahmoud Mokhtar's museum – the France-based Egyptian-Dutch artist analyses her own process of living, communication and creation. Strictly related to the artist herself and her surroundings, the collection on display is an ongoing project, based on many personal experiences.

Painter on a Study Trip: Mahmoud Khaled at Gypusm Gallery
In his solo show "Painter on a Study Trip", Alexandria-based contemporary artist Mahmoud Khaled presents works in photography, sculpture, painting, text, video and installation. The collection was triggered by Khaled's encounter with a 19th century painting from the collection of Alexandria's Museum of Fine Arts. The piece yielded a series of questions and reflections by the artist on the relationship between his education as a painter at the Academy of Fine Arts in Alexandria and the language of contemporary art.

Heading South: Collective exhibition at Khan Fonoon
This exhibition at Khan Fonoon brings together four artists – Aziz El-Hihi, Marco Magrini, Xavier Puigmartí and Yorgos Papageorgiou – with origins in Italy, Spain, Switzerland, and Greece, but who have all worked and lived in Egypt. They each have different styles, but all four are painters and each explores signs, symbols and interpretations of culture.
The exhibition runs until 12 May.

Mohsen Shalaan Retrospective at Palace of Arts
A retrospective show on the artistic career of Mohsen Shalaan opens on 4 May at the Palace of Arts, located within the Cairo Opera House grounds. Former head of the Fine Arts Sector, Mohsen Shalaan died on 10 February at his home in Cairo's Dokki district at the age of 63. Shalaan was born in Cairo on 14 April 1951. He held several positions at the culture ministry, the last of which was his appointment in 2006 as head of the Fine Arts Sector, a body responsible for several art institutions and museums. He was sacked from the job in 2010 over the theft of a multi-million dollar painting by Dutch post-Impressionist Vincent Van Gogh. He was one of the main defendants in the Poppy Flowers theft case and was found guilty and sentenced to a year in prison on charges of negligence and incompetence in the performance of his duties.

Once … a beautiful Egypt: Amina El-Demirdash at Zamalek Art Gallery
The exhibition features work by Amina El-Demirdash, an emerging Egyptian painter, born in 1986. In her artwork, El-Demirdash often reaches to themes representing Egyptian villages, towns and landscapes. In this exhibition, the artist was inspired by a collection of vintage family photographs dating back to first half of the 20th century. The collection is infused with a sense of nostalgia as El-Demirdash captures the people and places during Egypt's “belle époque.”

Hydrogen: American University in Cairo student exhibition
Curated by visual artist and professor Shady Elnoshokaty, Hydrogen is the 2014 senior student exhibition of the American University in Cairo's Visual Cultures Program. The show features 17 projects created over a year-long process of research and production by the showcased students. The exhibition features works by Miral Abdel-Moneim, Habiba Allam, Ines Alexandra El-Sayed El-Laban, Zeina Asfour, Mondow Ayoub, Marwa Benhalim, Samar El-Abbasy, Leila El-Eshe, Tuqa El-Harouny, Salma El-Shaffei, Doaa Gamil, Ingy Helmy, Samar Khaled, Ayette Meligy, Salma Osama, Nour Rashad and Alyaa Sadek.

Toys: Hany Rashed at Mashrabia
Hany Rashed presents his latest collection of artwork in what will be his ninth solo exhibit at the Mashrabia Gallery in downtown. In Toys, the artist tackles the assumption that human beings in contemporary society exist with a freedom that is limited by constraints and therefore resemble toys. Rashed presents a world of plastic objects in this exhibition, paradoxically responding to contemporary reality through creating inanimate toys.

Legend: Reda Abdel-Rahman at Gallery Misr
Reda Abdel-Rahman exhibits this month at Gallery Misr. Abdel-Rahman was born in the city of Ismailia in 1966, and has been passionate about art since the tender age of six. His practice ranges from large-scale murals to sculpture and paintings, which he mostly produces in his studio located on Dahab Island in the Nile. The artist is heavily influenced by ancient Egyptian art, and his oeuvre consistently features figurative painting and portraiture, often drenched in symbolism. In this exhibition, Abdel-Rahman reinterprets local and international folk tales and legends.

Silenced: Mohamed Monaiseer at Safarkhan Art Gallery
Emerging artist Mohamed Monaiseer holds his first solo exhibition at the Safarkhan Art Gallery until 21 May. Monaiseer presents a series of artwork submerged in almost illegible calligraphy, penned on natural fabrics in mixed media, including ink and chemicals. "What he has created is calligraphy that cannot be decoded, leading to a paradox, for what you see are words, but words that cannot be read or decrypted. Therefore, they can only be taken in through one's soul rather than one's mental concept in order to experience the essence of this project," reads the curatorial statement.
The exhibition runs until 21 May.

A Guest Without A Host Is A Ghost: collective show at Beirut, CIC, and Townhouse
A Guest Without A Host Is A Ghost is a year-long visual arts project that brings 30 artworks from the Kadist Art Foundation (Paris, San Francisco) to Egypt. Described by Beirut as a "temporary guest to the city," this miniature collection will appear in various shows and events across Cairo. An exhibition spread out across three venues, the Contemporary Image Collective (CIC), Townhouse and Beirut will kick off the project on 6 and 7 May, featuring works by artists with international acclaim, some of them making their Egyptian debuts.

Sweet Dreams: Amre Heiba at GIZ
In this exhibition at the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) office in Zamalek, oil paintings emanating from different stages of Amre Heiba's career will be displayed all summer. In this collection, the themes that typically characterise Amre Heiba will reappear, including childhood, solitude and romance.
