Media watchdog Reporters Without Borders said today that news media should take care when sending female reporters to cover ongoing demonstrations in Cairo's Tahrir Square. “We urge the media to take great care and to make the security of their reporters and local correspondents their priority,” Reporters Without Borders said in a statement. “It is more dangerous for a woman than a man to cover the demonstrations in Tahrir Square. That is the reality and the media must face it. It is the first time that there have been repeated sexual assaults against women reporters in the same place. The media must keep this in mind when sending staff there and must take special safety measures,” the statement added. While international media reports have said the organization is advising against sending female reporters to Tahrir Square, the organization clarified it is “not saying the international media should pull out and stop covering events in Egypt.” Rather, it said that female journalists going to Tahrir Square should be aware of “the threats that currently exist.” The RSF statement comes after French reporter Caroline Sinz yesterday became the latest woman to be sexually assaulted while covering protests in Cairo streets.
