After a brief lull in clashes, clashes resumed between protestors in Cairo's Tahrir Square and riot police early Wednesday evening. Hundreds of protestors marched with Sheikhs from al-Azhar to the site of clashes near Cairo's Tahrir Square. They had agreed to reconcile with security forces in order to stop violence. They chanted “peaceful, peaceful,” during the march. Central Security Forces then retreated behind army forces that deployed around the Ministry of Interior on Mohamed Mahmoud Street. Protestors also retreated from the street to Tahrir Square to prevent continuing clashes with security forces. Security forces permitted the sheikhs to meet leaders from the Ministry of Interior to discuss ways to end the clashes. Earlier in the day, protestors on Mohamed Mahmoud Street set tires on fire to obscure security forces' line of sight. The think cloud of smoke led protestors in Tahrir Square to believe there was a fire inside the street. Security forces responded with tear gas. Security forces also fired tear gas into the square while investigators from the Attorney-General's office were present. Members of the team began to suffocate and fled from the square. Protestors had formed a cordon around them. Arabic here Arabic here
