Abu Bakr Al-Gendi, head of the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics, said unemployment in Egypt rose the third quarter of this year by 11.9 percent, compared to an 8.9 percent increase in the same quarter in 2010. Gendi made the announcement at a press conference Thursday. It reflects a noticeable rise in unemployment rates this quarter when compared with the same quarter last year. Gendi said manpower reached 26.6 million people in the period between July and September 2011, an increase of 322,000, or 1.2 percent when compared to the last quarter. He said number of the unemployed reached 3.2 million after increase of 55,000, or 1.8 percent compared to the previous quarter. Overall, 76.6 percent of the unemployed are between 15 and 29 years old. Egyptians between 15 and 19 years old made up 10.8 percent of unemployment, those between 20 and 24 made up 43.1 percent of unemployment, and those between 25 and 29 made up 22.7 percent of unemployment.
