Sources in the Israeli navy claim that Israeli Army Chief of Staff Gen. Benny Jants ordered the Israeli navy to assist Egyptians on Billa Ferry, which caught fire in the Red Sea yesterday, immediately after being informed of the incident. Billa Ferry, which was heading from Aqaba in Jordon to Nuweiba, caught fire en route with 1,230 Egyptians on board. One Jordanian died after jumping into the sea and 12 Egyptians were injured. The Egyptian army controlled the fire and rescued the passengers. Israeli newspaper Haaretz confirmed that Egyptian authorities did not ask for help but that Jants ordered to help the Egyptians on the ferry because the accident was near Israeli territorial waters. In related news, sources in the Israeli army said they were ordered to permit Egyptian planes participating in the rescuing mission to fly over Israeli airspace. The sources also confirmed that the Israeli government offered to transport the injured to hospitals in Eilat, near Israel's border with Egypt. It is worth mentioning that Head of Red Sea Ports Mohamed Abdoul Kader confirmed that no Egyptians died in the accident.
