Arabic: المنظمة العربية لحقوق الإنسان Established: December 1983 Prominent members: Dr. Amin Mekki Medani, president; Dr. Seham al-Foreih, vice-president; Mohsen Awad, secretary general The Cairo-based Arab Organization for Human Rights (AOHR) was founded in December 1983. It has branches and affiliated organizations in seven other Arab countries: Algeria, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Tunisia and Yeman, and chapters in four non-Arab countries: Austria, Canada, Germany, and the United Kingdom. It is a non-profit and non-governmental organization. AOHR holds a general assembly every three years, were it elects a board of trustees and an executive committee. AOHR aims to promote and protect human rights in the Arab world in accordance with international standards, and also to promote the rights of Arabs living abroad. AOHR's aims include: calling for respect of human rights and freedoms of all citizens and residents of the Arab world; to defend individual rights; to endeavor to obtain release of detained or imprisoned persons who are subject to coercion of any kind because of their beliefs or political convictions or for reasons of race, sex, color, or language.
