Arabic: المنظمة المصرية لحقوق الإنسان Non-profit human rights NGO Established: April 1985 Prominent members: Yehia al-Gamal, Hisham Kasem, Ghada el-Shahbander The Egyptian Organization for Human Rights (EOHR) was founded in April 1985 with the goal of promoting and advocating for human rights in Egypt. It is registered at the Ministry of Social Affairs as No. 5220/2003. EOHR is a non-profit and non-governmental organization. It is considered one of the oldest human rights defense organizations in Egypt. It has a national membership of 2,300 people and 17 branches across Egypt. EOHR has cooperated with United Nations human rights bodies as well as with other international and regional human rights organizations. EOHR was granted a special consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council in 2006, which close interaction between EOHR and the United Nations. The organization's main goals are: - To provide respect for human rights and basic freedoms of all Egyptians and non-Egyptians in Egypt, in accordance with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international conventions; - To reform the Egyptian constitution and legislation to bring them in line with international human rights covenants; - Promoting rule of law and an independent judiciary; - Guaranteeing participation in public affairs without discrimination due to opinion, religion, gender race or color; - Guaranteeing freedom of opinion, expression, and religion; - To provide aid for all defendants and call to release those unfairly detained; - To ensure prisoners are treated in accordance with the international Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners.
