CAIRO: Head of the Egyptian Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) Hussein Tantawi today issued a decree to amend certain provisions of the Egyptian Criminal Law for anti-discrimination. The Law Decree: Supreme Council of the Armed Forces Law Decree No. 125 / 2011 amending Criminal Law provisions issued by No. 58 / 1937. Head of the Supreme Council of the armed Forces After reviewing the constitutional declaration issued February 13, 2011; after reviewing the constitutional declaration issued February 30, 2011; and after reviewing Criminal Law No. 58 /1937; as well as after the Cabinet approval… Article 1 The headline of section 11 in the second book of the Criminal Law shall be replaced with the following headline: "Section 11, Misdemeanor relating to religion and anti-discrimination. Article 2 An Article No. 161 shall be added to Section 11 in the second book of the Criminal Law. Article 161 (amended) provides that anyone committing any action that could cause religious, sex, racial, or language discrimination among the individuals; or against a sect, shall be imprisoned to three months at least, and be fined from 30,000 EGP up to 50,000 EGP. In accordance with Article thereof, the relevant decree is in line with the principle of equal opportunities, social justice and against disturbing the public peace. Any civil employee or anyone authorized to do a public service committing the crime mentioned in the first paragraph of the relevant Article shall be imprisoned to three months at least, and be fined from 50,000 EGP up to 100,000 EGP. Article 3: This decree shall be published in the State-Run newspaper, and shall have the same force and effect of Law. It shall be come into force in the second day of its issuance.
