Dr. Hossam Kamal, former head of Cairo University was elected to his position again with 51 votes to Dr. Mohi Saad Mansour's 31. Kamal was previously rejected by both students and staff at Cairo University for his ties to Egypt's ousted regime. Demonstrations throughout the summer called for his resignation. The committee supervising the elections began sort votes at 11:40 am after all 86 members of the election committee gathered. Dr. Amr Al-Kashef, Dr. Hossam Kamal, Dr. Hesham Gaber Al-Anany, Dr. Mohamed Al-Sharkawy of the Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Mohy Saad Abdel Hamid of the Faculty of Engineering, and Dr. Ahmed Abdel Hady of Faculty of Science were the candidates. Metwally Abdel Aziz and Dr. Talaat Al-Hadidy withdrew from the elections in favor of Mansour.
