The Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) will hold a water conference for Somalia in Cairo Wednesday, said the OIC's Secretary-General, Akmal Oghly. Oghly said the conference would include human rights organizations from member countries. The conference aims to provide potable water to Somalis suffering from a months-long drought. The Secretary-General reported that the conference plans on pledging to dig 300 artesian wells in 11 regions across Somalia. Oghly estimates well drilling will last six months. Relief efforts launched by the OIC last summer brought U.S. $40 million (238.4 million EGP) in aid to Somalia.
