CAIRO: Hegaz Band is performing at the French Cultural Center tonight, the second day of the Mesk Leil Festival, which will last until Thursday. Mohamed Abu Zekry, the youngest graduate of the Oud House in Cairo, leads the band. Naser Shamma, the great composer, was his teacher. The oud is a 12-string instrument traditional to the Arab world. Abu Zekry met French guitar player Jewom Hogan in 2007 and they held their first performance. The band consists of oud player Abu Zekry, guitarist Hogan, Anne Laure Le Bourget on percussion and Hugo Redet on the contrabass. Hegaz band is based in France. Their inspiration comes from Eastern music, jazz, blues, rock, “world,” Manouc and Tsegan.
