Potential presidential candidate Amr Moussa visited the headquarters of the Arab League Tuesday as a guest for the first time since leaving his office as Secretary-General of the Arab League two months ago. Moussa joined a meeting discussing unrest in Syria, which lasted for more than an hour and a half. Moussa said the situation is extremely unfortunate, and emphasized that violence against the Syrian people is not acceptable. Nabil el-Arabi, the new Secretary-General of Arab League, said he would carry an important letter tomorrow from Arab Foreign Ministers to the Syrian regime requesting an end to the violence. Arabi said his visit to Damascus would last a few hours without any meetings with the opposition. He will also meet Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. According to Arabi, the Syrian regime did not refuse the Arab initiative but welcomed the visit. Discussions between Moussa and Arabi included the Palestinian issue, and the next procedures necessary for a Palestinian declaration of statehood. Moussa said he presented the results of the European tour to Arabi, which indicated the enthusiasm of most European countries to support the Palestinians. He added that Europeans are increasingly realizing the futility of the current form of negotiations regarding the Palestinians.
