8:57am - Martyrs families, Mubarak supporters gather outside court Families of the martyrs of Egypt's January 25 Revolution and supporters of the leader it ousted gathered outside the Police Academy in Cairo's Fifth Settlement this morning, awaiting the second hearing of ousted leader Hosni Mubarak's murder trial. There is a strong presence of police and military forces around the academy. The families of the martyrs arrived early this morning trough Gate 8 to attend the hearing or watch it on screens installed outside the building. Supporters of the ousted president also gathered outside the building, prompting security forces to separate the two groups to prevent any clashes. Mubarak stands trial with his sons Alaa and Gamal and fugitive businessman Hussein Salem (tried in absentia) before the north Cairo Criminal Court. Judge Ahmed Rafaat is presiding over the trial. Mubarak and co are charged with financial crimes and murdering protesters during the January uprising that toppled Mubarak from power. 9:45am – Clashes between Mubarak supporters and opponents Clashes have begun between supporters and opponents of former President Mubarak. The groups threw stones at each other, prompting security forces to intervene. The clashes began when pro-Mubarak protesters attacked civil rights lawyer Khaled Abu Bakr, who is representing Mossab el-Shaeer, one of those injured during Egypt's revolution. They also attacked an Al-Jazeera reporter. Security forces rescued the reporter from the mob. 10:32am – Mubarak, sons arrive in courtroom Judge Ahmed Refaat began the second hearing of the trial of former President Hosni Mubarak this morning once Mubarak and his sons entered the courtroom. Mubarak was brought into the defendants' cage on a stretcher wearing a blue tracksuit. His sons Alaa and Gamal entered beside him, each carrying a copy of the Quran in their hands. Alaa positioned himself in front of his father to block him from the view of the cameras. 10:51 – Mixed reactions to Mubarak's appearance in court There were mixed reactions among Egyptians when Mubarak appeared in court today. Opponents of Egypt's former leader were jubilant as soon as Mubarak and his sons entered the docks. Mubarak's supporters, however, were deeply dismayed, some of them crying and a few fainted. 11:00am – Clashes continue Clashes between supporters and opponents of Mubarak are continuing outside the Police Academy where Mubarak's trial is being held. There have been numerous injuries on both sides. 11:18 – Lawyers chaos impedes trial, says judge Judge Ahmed Refaat said the chaos being caused by civil rights lawyers in the courtroom is impeding the progress of the trial. He said the original intention of the court was to hold the hearings one after one after the other in succession, but that this has become difficult to accomplish after the problems that arouse in Habib al Adly's trial yesterday and during the previous hearing of Mubarak's trial as a result of the demands of the civil rights lawyers. Judge Refaat added that the rights of everyone involved are very important to the court and that it will try to mete out justice to all. 11:30am – Mubarak lawyer presents demands Mubarak lawyer Farid el-Deeb presented a list of five demands to Judge Refaat, presiding over the former president's trial. The first request was to obtain permission from the court to allow the Administrative Control Authority to grant the defendants an official copy of the minutes of investigation regarding the villas in Egypt's Red Sea resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh. The second was an official copy of the minutes of the work of economic expert Ismail Mahmoud Morsy, who prepared the reports about the wealth of the accused for the Illicit Gains Authority. Deeb also asked for statements from the ambulance authority containing names and numbers of the deceased and the injured during the January 25 Revolution from all the governorates of Egypt and to identify the places and dates and times in which they were transferred from protests to hospitals. The forth request was for permission to photocopy all documents relating to the case file, and the fifth is to postpone the hearing to see all the files. 11:33am – Judge calls recess Judge Refaat called a recess in order to deliberate. 12:35 –Youm7 photographer injured in clashes Youm7 photographer Maher Alexander was injured today in clashes between supporters and opponents of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. The groups threw stones at each other before and during the second session of Mubarak's murder trial today, which led to a number of injuries on both sides. Mubarak supporters chased the families of the martyrs, who escaped into the streets around the Police Academy in Cairo's Fifth Settlement, where Mubarak's trial in being held. An Al-Jazeera reporter was also attacked by pro-Mubarak demonstrators today, and was rescued by security forces. 1:00pm – Judge announces trial will no longer be telecast Judge Ahmed Rafaat announced that the trial of Mubarak will no longer be telecast live. He also adjourned the case until September 5, when it will be merged with the case of Habib al-Adly.
