CAIRO: Dozens of Egyptian youth launched a campaign called “Let's write our constitution” which aims to prepare a popular charter including all principles of a new constitution. The youth said they are voluntary and do not belong to any political party. The youth said anyone can join the campaign and belong to any party, but each person will represent him- or herself and not only the party. The charter represents the Egyptian's will, as it is their right to participate in writing the new constitution, according to Ahmed Ragheb, executive manager of the Hisham Mubarak Center for Human Rights. Regarding Article 2 of the 1971 constitution, which describes Egypt as an Islamic state and Sharia (Islamic law) as the main basis of legislation, Ragheb said it is not one of the campaigns priorities. Priorities include education and healthcare. The campaign idea is inspired from the South African experience, said Alaa Abdel-Fatah, a campaign member. The chart aims to achieve dignity, freedom, and social justice governed by the people. The youth formed three groups for research, discussion with people and technological communication. The charter will also be online for all people abroad and inside the country.
