Factbox on Hossam Al-Badri, who resigned from his post as Ahli manager on Monday after a run of disappointing results. Born: March 18, 1960 in Suez, Egypt. Playing career * A one-club central defender, Al-Badri started his career at Ahli in 1970 after leaving Suez to live in Cairo. * He was promoted to the first team in 1978 and made his debut in Ahli's 3-1 victory over Alexandria-based club Olympic under late Hungarian manager Nandor Hidegkuti. * He excelled in a memorable Cairo derby against Zamalek in 1981, playing a key role in helping Ahli beat their arch rivals 1-0 to claim the Egyptian league title. * Al-Badri played 124 matches with Ahli in all competitions and won with the club four league titles, three Egyptian Cups, one African Cup and two African Cup Winners' Cup medals. * He earned 18 caps with the Egyptian national team but did not win any major honors. * A niggling knee injury forced Al-Badri to retire in 1987 after spending his entire short career with Ahli. Back to Ahli * After his retirement, Al-Badri opted to take a rest from football as he worked in the fields of commerce and management. * He worked in Kenya for three years in the early 1990s before returning to Ahli to work as an assistant to Anwar Salama in the club's football youth sector. * He was appointed as the senior team's assistant coach following the arrival of Dutch manager Jo Bonfrere in 2002 and remained in his job until Portuguese Manuel Jose took over in late 2003. * Al-Badri also occupied the football director role in 2005 following the death of former Ahli keeper Thabet Al-Batal. Managerial career * Al-Badri was surprisingly named Ahli's boss in the summer of 2009 following the departure of Jose. * Portuguese Nelo Vingada was supposed to take over from his compatriot Jose but he backtracked on his agreement with Ahli to prompt the club, who had shortage of time, to name Al-Badri as the new manager. * Al-Badri's first season in charge was relatively successful, with Ahli winning the Egyptian league for the sixth consecutive season before reaching the Egyptian Cup final where they lost to Harras Hodoud on penalties. * He was also acclaimed for promoting several youngsters to the first team but his relationship with the fans remained frosty as they repeatedly compared him to Jose, under whom Ahli won a host of titles in emphatic fashion. * Ahli needed a last-gasp goal against Libya's Ittihad to avoid an embarrassing Champions League exit from the preliminaries before eventually waving goodbye to the tournament at the semi-final stage after an awful and bad-tempered display against Tunisia's Esperance. * More disappointing results followed in the Egyptian league, including a surprise 1-1 draw at lowly Gouna who wasted a handful of clear-cut opportunities to stun the Red Devils. * Al-Badri decided to hand in his resignation after Ahli suffered a 3-1 defeat by bitter foes Ismaili, with the team's fans chanting against him in the dying minutes. * Ahli board of directors convened on Monday to announce they had accepted Al-Badri's resignation.
