Swedish coach Lars Lagerback has turned down Nigeria's offer to extend his contract for four years, the country's football federation said on Friday. "Lagerback told me he could not continue as the coach of the Super Eagles," Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) president Amuni Maigari told sports daily Soccer Star. "He feared that he might not be able to pen a four-year deal that would keep him in Nigeria for that long." Lagerback succeeded Shaibu Amodu as Nigeria boss last February to lead them at the World Cup finals in South Africa. The team's World Cup campaign was anything but impressive as they bowed out at the first hurdle after some disappointing displays. They finished bottom of Group B with just one point which they gained against South Korea after suffering losses to Argentina and Greece. "Lagerback thanked the NFF for the opportunity given him to take the Eagles to the World Cup," Maigari added. "He said the experience was worth it and that he would always remember Nigeria and their good people." Former Nigeria Olympic and U-20 coach Samson Siasia is a frontrunner to replace Lagerback, Maigari said. Siasia is currently in charge of Nigerian side Heartland, who held Egyptian champions Ahli to a 1-1 in their Champions League group stage opener last Sunday.
