Nigeria finished third in the African Cup of Nations for the seventh time in their history after beating Algeria 1-0 on Saturday. Striker Victor Obinna scored the winner 11 minutes after the break in an uninspiring affair in Benguela to give Nigeria the bronze medal. He burst into the area unopposed to place the ball through the legs of Algeria's stand-in keeper Mohamed Zemmamouche, who replaced the suspended Faouzi Chaouchi. Algeria also played without Rafik Halliche and Nadir Belhadj, who were sent off in the team's 4-0 defeat to Egypt in the semi final. "This was a very good competition overall," Algeria coach Rabah Saadane said after the game. "We played six high-level matches, we spotted our mistakes and this was a good preparation for the World Cup." It is the fourth time Nigeria clinch the bronze medal in the last five Nations Cups. Defending champions and six-time winners Egypt face Ghana in the tournament's final on Sunday.
