Algeria legend Rabah Madjer is hoping that Thursday's African Cup of Nations semi-final with Egypt would be a gateway to a better relationship between the Arab neighbors. The edgy competition involving the North African rivals over a World Cup place last year was marred by a series of off-field conflicts at both ends. The saga, mainly occurring in November 2009, has almost resulted in a major political conflict between Egypt and Algeria. After 70 days from the infamous playoff tie in Sudan, Egypt and Algeria clash again as Madjer hopes for a new chapter between the arch-rivals. Brothers "We have to forget the past. We are brothers," Madjer told Egyptian Modern Sport TV on Wednesday. "I hope this match would mark a new chapter between Egypt and Algeria.
Madjer "A football match should never cause problems among nations. I really hope to see the losing team congratulating the winner after the game." Unit Madjer lauded the progress of the Egypt team in recent years as he believes that both sides have equal chances to win the match in Benguela. "Egypt made great progress throughout the past five years. The strength of this team is due to the fact that they are one unit," the former Porto star added. "Even with the absence of stars in (Mohamed) Abou-Treika and Amr Zaki, we can see good players like Ahmed Al-Muhammadi, Shikabala and Geddo. "I also believe the Algerian team are in good form after their poor start. We have a very strong squad with talented players. "I believe both teams have a 50-50 chance of winning. It is very difficult to pick a favorite."
